Ikigai is a Japanese cultural concept that supports individuals in identifying meaning in their daily lives and bringing those meaningful sources to the forefront of daily living. It is often used for adults going through a transition, e.g., retirement from work is the primary usage in Japan. In the Western world, it has often been used to find "purpose" and "mission." If you've seen the Ikigai Venn Diagram, then you have a broad view of Ikigai. But Ikigai is more than this Westernized 'tool.' It is a way of being in the world with intention, joy, and authentic engagement in your chosen occupations, or that which occupies your time.
But what if we could support teens in setting a pathway forward NOW through middle and high schools that support meaningful engagement in their "why"? Through this workshop, teens will work to uncover meaningful sources of joy and enjoyment, work to align those with their academic requirements, and then set goals to support what they want to do, who they want to be, and how they can become what they envision for their near future. A person's Ikigai often changes and shifts during the shifts over the life span, and it is never too late to start.
